Also: Enshrined Proposer-Builder Separation · EIP-7732

A change to Ethereum that writes the existing split between block proposers and block builders into the protocol itself, instead of leaving it to software outside the protocol.

Proposers and builders are already separate in practice: most proposers outsource block construction and take a bid. That arrangement runs through MEV-boost, which sits outside the consensus rules. Enshrined proposer-builder separation moves it inside, as EIP-7732, scheduled for the Glamsterdam hardfork.

How the slot is redrawn

  • The proposer publishes a beacon block carrying a signed bid and no transactions.
  • The attestation committee votes on that beacon block.
  • The builder publishes the execution payload, having watched the attestation weight accumulate.
  • A Payload Timeliness Committee of 512 validators votes on whether the payload was actually available.

That committee is deliberately small against the roughly thirty thousand ordinary attesters, because it answers one narrow question quickly: did the payload arrive in time.

What changes for builders

Builders become staked participants, depositing a minimum of 1 ETH. That makes trustless payment possible — the consensus layer can debit a builder's stake and credit the proposer directly, rather than relying on an execution-layer transaction as today.
